Power
Summit welcomes the opportunity to provide training to
those who are new to the business of construction. Your public
agency or training organization can partner with Power Summit to tailor a
program to meet your specific needs. We offer a cafeteria approach in which you
simply choose from a list of existing programs. We work with the choices you make, adapting them as necessary
to represent the unique requirements of your region and or agency and
present the programs under your auspices . . . at your convenience. So in
addition to the specific small business programs listed here, be sure to
consider others from our training programs
page as well. Creating an entire
certificate program for San Diego State University is just one example
of how we might also work with you. Partnering with The ETI
and The San Diego County Water Authority is an example of working with
a larger collaborative team to produce quality programs within a larger
training goal . . . The Training Source

SEB01
- How to Start and
Manage a Construction Company - "Making the move from worker
to owner"
Developed
and taught by pros who have done it - This session works through
industry standard methodology adding common sense motivation to equip
participants with valuable, practical tools and skill sets
required for success in this tough arena. "Templates,"
check lists, and samples of "the way it's done" are included
in generous portions. Licenses, bonding, insurance, prelim notification,
lien releases, basic information flow, and project management are all
part of this exciting day-long course
Instructor:
Paul Stout or Dan
Fauchier - you can learn more about Dan at www.danzpage.com
SEB02 - Using
QuickBooks and other simple technology to run your construction
company
This
workshop is our "construction accounting 101."
The program is taught by a local practicing CPA experienced with both
construction companies and teaching/public speaking. All the
basics are covered against the backdrop of the very popular and
affordable QuickBooks accounting software. Perfect for the
"do-it yourselfer" or for the bookkeeping partner /
associate.
SEB03 - Taking your Construction Company
Accounting Practices to the next Level
This
"next level" financial emphasis workshop teaches strategies
for cash flow management, progress payments, collections, job costing,
reporting, and working with your banker, CPA and bonding agent to
achieve faster solvency and more credibility in the market. Using
programs like Contractor
V and Timberline as examples, the course
demonstrates "next level" technology for the serious, growing
contractor. It does not promote a specific product or developer.
SEB04 -
Juggling your
Office and Field Operations in the Construction Industry - Includes
"managing multiple projects"
The
biggest enemy to small construction business owners is working too
much "in the business" and not enough "on the
business" this day-long session teaches how to do
both and remain effective, profitable and sane. Participants learn
when and how to take off the tool belt, get out of the ditch . . . off
the equipment and get back to the office or business at hand. An
artful mix of time management, negotiating, dealing with problematic
people, project management and business management - this fast paced
course hits the nail on the head. It lays it all out in terms
everyone can understand and embrace. Generous use of check lists,
forms, diagrams and useful anecdotes makes the session a must attend.

In
addition to these programs that have been developed specifically for
participants representing small emerging businesses, any of the
regular Power Summit training programs can
be adapted for this very dynamic and growing audience.

·
Power Summit, working for Triaxial Management Services and CalTrans
(California Department of Transportation) developed six sessions for
presentation to representatives of small disadvantaged business
enterprises (SDBE) in Oakland California during December of
2002. The official title of the program, "doing business
with Caltrans online" fails to describe the in-depth nature of
the program. Developing new CalTrans specific material and adapting
other Power Summit programs to specifically meet the needs of the audience
resulted in six dynamic all-day sessions.
·
During 1999 and 2000 two of
our key instructors, while working for a San Diego based construction
consulting firm, worked closely with the COC (Contractor Opportunity
Center) in San Diego California to provide specialized training for SDBE
participants. Programs in Claims
avoidance and Estimating were
cornerstones of that ongoing effort.
